About
Kerry Vasquez is a Los Angeles based artist. Born in London, but raised in Northern California, she received her BFA from NYU in 2005. Vasquez returned to California in 2009, establishing her practice in Los Angeles. Inspired by the light and colors of Southern California, her work strives to capture the essence of her surroundings via gouache and mixed media. Vasquez abstracts landscapes evoking a tension between nature and urbanity, solitude and a sense of belonging. Her work has been shown and sold at the Highland Park Artist Art Walk 2016-17.
"Inspired by the dramatic visual landscape of Southern California, my work explores color’s ability to evoke strong emotion. The primal desire to experience joy through color is often neglected, especially in our digital age. I abstract to create powerful compositions rather than dwell on their sentimental associations. Engaging subjects of the body, light, land, sky, color and contrast are of continual interest to me. I primarily work in gouache, yielding the most vibrant color palettes. My most recent work includes found materials, spray paint, oil and acrylic. The found objects have all been collected on walks around Southern California and the paintings are made from photographs taken on these walks. Photography is the beginning of my artistic process. I frame the moment and capture the feeling. By using recurring subject matter, the work conveys the formal concerns of our desire for the communal experience within the landscape of the infinite."
